The Project

The Triphop mobile app is a perfect hotel reservation service that allows users to plan trips while riding a bus, or sitting on a meeting, or in a bar with buddies discussing future adventures. Travelers now get the opportunity to search and book hotels at the best prices, take advantage of the unique offers, and receive the cashback for their activity.

The Challenges

The mobile app shares the same functionality with the web platform, but the conditions of the app’s usage are entirely different. The challenge was to place all the information conveniently and clearly and save a recognizable design and ease of use principles.

The laptop can’t always be at hand, so the mobile app should have an overrunning list of features. It was essential to making a user get all the information with the minimum number of clicks.

Exploration

Having answered the question “who are our users?” and “what is their need?” while designing the web version, we already had a portrait of our customer, but we still had a lot to do.

We needed to anticipate as much as possible, predict all potential reactions and problems that may arise, and look for options to level them out. Learning what our user needs, helped us design the app that has information covered in an intuitive design.

Prototyping

Prototyping the app, we aimed at keeping all the advantages of the platform: favorable rates, quick reservations, 24/7 support, we put that all on the primary position.

We left enough white space for focusing on the main needs: access data on bookings, save favorite options, review maps, etc. We placed all the necessary icons in the bottom panel to reduce the number of clicks to get the information a user needs.

Detailed Design

As our target audience is a young person who cannot imagine the day without a smartphone, we kept the same visual style and used purple and gree colors for the unique offers of the product.

We also add some innovative interactions such as a booking slider to increase excitement with the upcoming trip. Sliding the button instead of just clicking “Confirm” prolongs the sensation that something adventurous waits ahead.

We migrated all the core functions from the web platform and made it even faster and easier to find the best hotel deals. In such a way, we kept a more reliable connection between a user and the product.

Final thoughts

When you develop a mobile app that replicates an existing product, such as a web platform, it is essential to remember the visual features and aspects of the current essence and transfer them to a new one. In that way, the user doesn’t get lost and feels comfortable using your product on a different device. Anything that is a part of product experience, even a tiny detail, should be replicated in a certain way to resemble an original product essence.
